Free zone company setup in the UAE

How much does each free zone cost?

Free zones price their licenses very differently. A Sharjah or Ras Al Khaimah zone can start below AED 6,000, a Dubai zone such as IFZA or Meydan near AED 12,500, and a premium hub such as DMCC much higher. The cheapest zone is only the right one if its license lets you serve your customers.

How do you choose a free zone?

Start with the customers, then the cost. A free zone license is issued by the zone and works inside the zone and abroad, so onshore sales need a distributor, a dual license or a mainland permit. After that, compare these four things:

  • Entry price and what it includes. Check whether the flexi desk, establishment card and visa quota are in the package.
  • Visa quota. The number of visas depends on the package and office size, so ask for the figure in writing.
  • Activities. Make sure the zone allows every activity you plan, including controlled ones.
  • Address and reputation. A Dubai or premium address helps with some banks and clients, and costs more.

Hidden costs to check before you pay

These lines are missing from many headline prices.

  • Visa bundle. Each visa adds the medical test, Emirates ID and health insurance.
  • Office upgrade. A flexi desk is cheap, but stock or staff in the office means a larger unit.
  • Activity approvals. Controlled activities need a regulator's approval and fee.
  • Bank balance. Banks commonly ask for a minimum balance, from AED 20,000.
  • Renewals. License, establishment card and office renew every year.

How long does free zone setup take?

Most free zone licenses are issued in days, not weeks, once documents are complete. Visas and the bank account take longer.

Frequently asked questions

At the time of writing, the Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah zones, SPC Free Zone, Shams and RAKEZ, start the lowest, around AED 5,000 to 6,900 without a visa. Dubai zones such as IFZA and Meydan start near AED 12,400 to 12,500. Cheaper is only better if the license suits your customers.

IFZA, Meydan, Shams and SPC Free Zone all suit consultancies. IFZA and Meydan give a Dubai license, while Shams and SPC cost less. Choose by whether you need a Dubai address and how many visas you plan.

It depends on the goods. DMCC suits commodities and gold, DAFZA suits goods that arrive by air, RAKEZ suits traders who may need a warehouse, and SPC and IFZA suit online and general trading. Onshore sales need a distributor or mainland arrangement.

Yes, some owners hold licenses in more than one zone, or add a branch in another. Each has its own fees and visa quota, so it makes sense only when your business needs both.

The license fee is charged every year and stays close to the first year, while one-off items such as registration are not repeated. Fees can change when the zone updates its schedule, so confirm before you renew.

A qualifying free zone company can pay 0 percent on qualifying income and 9 percent on other income above AED 375,000, if it meets the conditions. The position depends on your activity, so confirm it with a tax adviser.

The quota depends on the zone, package and office size. Desk-based packages allow fewer visas than physical offices. Always ask for the number in writing before you pay.

You can close the first license and open another, or open a new company, but a direct transfer is not always possible. Visas must be cancelled and re-issued, so plan the change with your adviser.
